Shelby named a Tree City USA the for seventh year

Wednesday, May 9, 2007 12:46 PM MDT

Shelby is once again distinguished in being named a Tree City USA for seven years in a row. The city has worked diligently to establish and implement a city tree ordinance, tree inventory and planting and maintenance plan to sustain and maintain the trees in our community, as well as educate the community on the benefits of proper tree care and planting.

City officials have developed a long-range plan for the planting and care of trees in Shelby's park system and public areas. The priority of the city at the present time is reviewing parks and public areas for maintenance, replacement of aging and dead trees and planting of new trees.

This year the City of Shelby once again partnered with the Shelby Junior High School students to clean up around the sports complex and Aronow Park and remove and replant several trees. The project was completed in celebration of Arbor Day on Friday, April 27.

The city is also encouraging groups and organizations throughout the community to select a park, fence line, roadway or other area of the community that needs cleaning as a special project.

Efforts like these create a tremendous impact in our small community. The city hopes continued partnerships with the schools and local organizations will foster and strengthen our forestry program and educate, encourage and enable citizens to care for, preserve and plant trees in our community for the benefit of all citizens now and for years to come.
